Student Visa
The Australian Government operated an Overseas Student Program. This allows people
who are not permanent residents or Australian Citizens to study in Australia.
Australia offers
a very high level of education coupled with a fantastic lifestyle. Australia is
a great place to live and study. The standard of living is one of the highest in
the world. Universities and colleges in Australia are recognised world wide for
their curriculum and standard of education and tuition.
The Overseas Student
Program allows people who are not Australian citizens or permanent residents to
study in Australia. A person who would like to study under this program must obtain
a Student Visa before they can commence a course of study in Australia. To be granted
a Student Visa you must undertake a registered course on a full-time basis.
Students will need
to show that they have the financial capacity to pay course fees, living expenses,
air tickets and so on. Usually, the visa will expire soon after the end of the nominated
course. Students who wish to stay in Australia and are enrolled in a university
course and are due to finish within 6 months are urged to apply for Permanent Residency
before they finish.
As a student in Australia, you will only
have a limited working allowance on your visa, so you will need enough funds to
pay for living expenses and tuition and this funding must be evidenced in order
to apply successfully. If you take time off from study to work, you will possibly
exceed your work allowance on the visa and in addition you may fall below full-time
study levels and fail academically. These results can lead to visa cancellation.
Other criteria include being of good health,
a committed student and of good character - without a criminal record. It is important
that students’ English language ability is proficient enough to successfully study
in Australia. If a student’s English is not good enough, most education providers
will arrange for you to take an intensive English course before starting the main
tuition. Furthermore, applicants need to take out Overseas Student Health Cover
(OSHC) because Medicare is not available to overseas students.
You may undertake any course of study for
up to three months on a Working Holiday or Visitor Visa. For study lasting more
than three months, a Student Visa must be applied for.
